The bullet book

In Marsh’s library, St Patrick’s Close, Dublin 8, there’s an antique French book that was damaged by a bullet in the Rising.

A number of hours after the surrender on Easter Sunday a British Army machine gun located about 300m away in the Iveagh buildings, fired a machine gun burst on the library, damaging the windows and shutters and roof of the library; also some books were reported to be “wounded”, in the library records. The passage of the bullet through the book shows the velocity of the bullet as it ripped a path through from the spine out the other side. The book had been brought from France to avoid its being burned in 1865, only to be shot in Dublin.
